Moen Home Care When you're looking after others or taking care of yourself, it's good…
Whether you’ve purchased an old home that needs some remodeling or are just ready for an update, one of the best places to start is in the bathroom. You spend a fair amount of time in the bathroom each day and use it to accomplish a number of tasks like shaving, applying makeup, doing your hair, bathing the dog and kids, and cleaning up. You might even use the bathroom to relax when you can find some time to yourself to enjoy a warm bubble bath.
An outdated, ugly bathroom can be frustrating and even stressful (especially when guests come over and you are crossing your fingers they won’t ask to use the restroom).
Think about what it is in your bathroom right now that you hate the most. Is it the flooring? Is it the poor lighting? Is it the old, outdated tub? Or is it as simple as the terrible paint color that’s ruining the whole vibe of the room?
There are a lot of different elements that can make you hate your bathroom, especially when they combine to create the perfect disaster. Some of those elements may be simple to fix, but others can be a huge undertaking. Here are some of the bathroom updates you can do, based on difficulty, to make you feel more at home.
These updates are easy to do on your own and can be done in a matter of hours or a couple of days, making them the perfect weekend projects.
Paint. You might be surprised at what a big difference a simple coat of paint can make. The wrong color can ruin an entire room. Whether you’ve purchased a fixer upper or are redecorating in a way that doesn’t even remotely match the color scheme of your previous décor, a simple paint job may be just what you need.
When you go to repaint, consider a neutral paint color that will match your new décor as well as any décor you may want to change to down the road. You might be tempted to paint a soft purple on the walls, but a few years down the road, when you want to change things up again, that purple likely won’t fit at all.
Update the light fixtures.Sometimes old-fashioned light fixtures can add charm and character to a bathroom, but other times they’re just ugly and draw away from the overall theme and décor of the room. Whether you want to find old-fashioned light fixtures with actual charm or want to add something more contemporary, buying and installing new light fixtures could have more of an impact on the look and feel of your bathroom than you might think.
Decorate. Just as simple as painting, getting rid of old decorations and adding some new, updated ones can make all the difference in changing the look and feel of your bathroom. Trade those faded doilies for crates of succulent arrangements, and switch out those pressed flowers in frames for your favorite typography.
These updates may not be so simple that they can be done without instruction or in just a few days, but can probably be done on your own. If you feel more comfortable getting assistance, though, hire a trusted professional.
Replace the vanity. The vanity is one of the last things that you might think of to replace in order to update and refresh your bathroom. Although you can paint a plain vanity and add trim to spruce it up, sometimes it really does take an entirely new vanity.
Install a new sink. Bathrooms aren’t always at the top of the list when it comes to remodels – even though remodeling the bathroom can make a big difference. If you bought a house that hasn’t had a bathroom remodel since at least the 80s, you know just how… interesting the sink can be and how it can bring everything else in the room down.
Switching out the sink for a newer one can make a big difference in the room. Whether you choose a standard sink or go with a vessel type sink, you’ll feel a lot better than keeping that pink seashell sink around.
Add storage. It’s difficult to feel at ease in a cluttered bathroom, and it might make you feel like it’s never clean, no matter how much you scrub. Adding storage to the room will give you more places to keep things that might otherwise have to sit on the counters like toiletries, towels, etc.
Whether you add storage over the toilet, add an extra cabinet, or even just add a shelf behind the door, storage can help you get things cleaned up and make you feel more at ease.
These updates can make all the difference but can be hard to do on your own. They’re not necessarily expensive, but it’s recommended that you hire a professional.
Change out the tub. The bathtub and/or shower in your bathroom can counteract any updates you’ve made if it’s too old and worn. Changing out the tub can make a big difference and you might be surprised at how easy it is to do. You don’t even have to remove the existing tub or shower to do it.
You can hire a team of professionals to replace your existing tub or shower. It will give your entire bathroom a facelift.
Redo the flooring. Flooring like carpet doesn’t belong in bathrooms – not only can it make the room look outdated, it can be a health hazard since it collects moisture and makes a great home for mold. It can be quite the undertaking to install new flooring whether it be tile, hardwood, or laminate, but it will be worth the effort and the price when it’s all done and you get to see the beautiful results.
Rearrange the layout. Rearranging the layout of your bathroom is a lot more complicated than applying a new coat of paint and you should definitely hire a professional plumber, electrician, and any other tradesman needed to get the job done. When it’s all said and done, though, rearranging the layout of your bathroom can open it up, make it feel roomier, and make it seem brighter.
Although some of the updates may be simple, you might be surprised at how much of a difference they can make. What updates does your bathroom need the most?
