How to Improve Pain Points in the Bathroom

Bathrooms are one of the main rooms in the house, even if they aren’t the main focus. They get a good amount of the traffic that comes through and can be a safe haven for those looking to soak away the cares of the day. A bathroom full of pain points, though, is anything but relaxing and can not only make it difficult to wind down, but difficult to even get through tasks that need to be done.

Although pain points will vary from bathroom to bathroom, and will be of more or less importance depending on the person, there’s no denying that certain pain points just can’t be ignored. Here are some of the biggest pain points in the bathroom and how you can improve or address them.

Poor Lighting – Poor bathroom lighting can be frustrating. It makes it difficult to see what you’re doing and could be the reason you have a bad hair day or the reason that your foundation isn’t blended perfectly. It can also be dangerous and cause accidents like stubbed toes or be the reason for lost jewelry.

Luckily, fixing poor lighting is fairly easy. Even just replacing lightbulbs can do the trick. You can trade those old, dull incandescent for bright, illuminating LEDs in a matter of minutes. If the issue is that there isn’t enough lighting, you can try finding battery operated lights that can be hung up or lamps that are safe for bathrooms. If you simply need new and/or additional light fixtures, an experienced electrician should be able to get the job done fast.

Bad Ventilation – Bad ventilation can result in a myriad of problems. From a steamy mirror to wet walls and lingering, unpleasant smells, there’s no ignoring the problems that bad ventilation presents. There is equipment you can use like dehumidifiers and fans to help mitigate some of the issues, but the best option would be to hire a professional to install a ventilation system that will solve all of the problems of bad ventilation in one.

Mold – Another issue that can be caused by bad ventilation is mold. If there’s too much moisture in your bathroom and it gets trapped in grout, drywall, curtains, carpet, wood, etc., it will make the perfect home for mold to grow. While not all mold is as dangerous as black mold, it can cause you and your family to get sick and feel under the weather.

If you have mold in your bathroom, use a bleach solution to clean anywhere that you can see the mold. That may even mean scrubbing in between tiles with a toothbrush. If you’re unsure about mold growing in places you can’t see, contact a professional for help. You may want to trade out your carpet for tile and replace any porous surfaces with something nonporous to avoid more mold going forward.

Not Enough Space – Bathrooms in older homes, specifically, tend to have very little space which makes it difficult to get things done, especially if you have to share the bathroom with other people. Unfortunately, there’s not too much that can be done about making the space bigger without a full-on remodel and expansion, but there are some more affordable and fast solutions that you can use to hold you over until then.

There are a lot of different storage options that you can use to help free up counter space. There are storage options for inside the shower, on the backs of doors, over the toilet, etc. If those don’t do the trick, you can always work with a professional to install new fixtures that will take up less space like a pedestal sink or a corner bathtub.

Creaky or Cracked Flooring – Another issue that is quite common in older houses is creaky or cracked flooring. Not only is it obnoxious, but it can be dangerous too since cracked tile can be sharp. Since the bathroom is a room that gathers a lot of moisture, it’s best to avoid putting rugs in there to cover up cracks. The best solution for both creaky and cracked floors is to install new flooring altogether.

The best types of flooring for bathrooms are tile and laminate since they don’t collect as much moisture and create a home for mold. These days, though, many home owners are getting creative and installing floors using non-traditional materials like concrete.

An Outdated Aesthetic – While old homes are notorious for their outdated, peeling wallpaper, and terribly out-of-style paint colors, even bathrooms in homes from more recent decades can have an outdated aesthetic that makes them hard to relax in and enjoy. A simple coat of paint could be the perfect solution, but sometimes it takes more than that. Replacing old fixtures like sinks and cabinets for newer features on top of adding a new coat of paint may be what it takes, but it will make all the difference.

A Shallow Bathtub – If you’ve ever tried taking a bath in a shallow tub, you know there are few things more annoying. Most of your body is exposed to the cold air and there’s not enough water to get cleaned up with. Luckily, bathtubs are a fairly simple pain point to address. With our bathtub replacement options and bath installation services, you can find the perfect tub at the perfect depth so you can feel more comfortable and better enjoy your baths.
